Session Description:
Civil engineers have been pioneers in the development of analytical methods for the analysis of sediment transport in streams. In the last 50 years, more mechanistic approaches have been put forward, allowing a transition of the field from a collection of regression-based methods to complex theoretical/computational approximations. We endeavor to discuss in this session the present of the sediment-transport field associated with those mechanistic models and, more importantly, to discuss the lines of future research. We are interested in presentations related to two-phase flow models for sediment in suspension; Lagrangian models for bed-load transport; studies of non-Fickian diffusion of sediment particles; non-dilute conditions; and novel theories and experimental evidence for cohesive sediment. This session benefits from the critical moment the field is experiencing when more physics-based analyses of sediment transport are being carried out with success. Still, many challenges arise and will be the subject of this session.
