Session Description:
Water has been critical for human populations through prehistory and will continue to be into the future. This session invites multidisciplinary contributions from instrumental observations, modeling and paleoenvironmental reconstructions of shifting hydroclimate regimes. Evidence for these shifts comes from river runoff records, tree rings, speleothems, soil geochemistry, wetlands, playas, and lakes that indicate a substantially different hydroclimate from the historical one and can provide insights into how processes that control water availability respond to changing climate forcing. For example, satellite imaging of water vapor in the atmosphere identified ‘rivers’ of extremely moist air directed toward the west coast of continents. These atmospheric rivers - associated with major flooding events - demonstrate a mechanism by which extreme changes in hydroclimate could occur. Investigations of geologic records can provide insights into how such phenomenon, including but not limited to atmospheric rivers and monsoons, have evolved over time.
