Session ID#: 17807

Session Description:
While channels with cohesive beds and/or banks are found throughout the world, predicting the occurrence and rate of fine grained, cohesive channel erosion remains problematic.  Unlike noncohesive sediments, cohesive soils are bound together via multiple mechanisms related to interlayer clay bonding, sesquioxide-cement bonds, and organic secretions by roots and soil microorganisms.  Thus the erosion of channels with cohesive boundaries is a particularly complex and dynamic process.   Predicting the occurance and rate of cohesive soil erosion has implications for channel migration, infrastructure protection, and water quality impairment due to sediment and associated contaminants.  This session will highlight research that advances our understanding of the processes and prediction of cohesive channel erosion, including field and laboratory measurement techniques, as well as modeling of streambank retreat and channel migration.
