Session Description:
Physics of earthquake rupture propagation is a classic problem, on which many studies have been conducted. Due to the upgrade of scientific instruments and methods, now we are able to study earthquake rupture in greater detail in laboratory experiments, in addition to the field observations and numerical simulations. Highlights of recent discoveries include the diverse weakening mechanisms during fault slip, the scale dependence of fault friction and fracture energy, the modulation of fault zone property and surface topography on rupture behavior, the generation of supershear ruptures under heterogeneous conditions, and the non-persistent behaviors of the same fault patch during different earthquakes. In this session, we welcome studies, from friction experiments, seismic/geodetic observations, and numerical modeling, to reflect recent progress in studying the source properties, the detailed rupture process, the involved mechanisms, and the energy budget of earthquakes.
