Session Description:
Stable isotopic ratios of some 20 “non-traditional” (i.e., not H, C, N, O. or S) elements are now being used in geochemistry to understand the origin and history of terrestrial and extraterrestrial materials. It is now known that these stable isotopes can be significantly fractionated not only at low-temperatures, but also at high-temperatures during igneous and metamorphic processes. This session will focus on recent developments in non-traditional stable isotope systems ranging from very light elements such as Li and Mg up to high atomic number elements such as Tl and U. We seek contributions examining the mechanisms of non-traditional isotope fractionation and applications to problems such as continental and oceanic magmatism, paleoclimate reconstructions, early solar system processes, subduction processes and mantle heterogeneity through natural, theoretical and experimental studies.
