Quantitative Approaches to Paleoclimate Data, Models, and Their Intercomparison II

Session Description:
A wide variety of different climate states are recorded in the geological record (spanning greenhouse to ice-house scenarios). The modelling of past climates in combination with data from the geological record, provides a unique laboratory to evaluate the ability of models to forecast global change.  However, there are inherent uncertainties surrounding the interpretation of proxy data and the simulation of past climates (e.g. seasonal biases, age model uncertainties, geographical and temporal sparsity of records).  We welcome abstract submissions from any time period (especially pre-Quaternary) that address the following challenges: (1) Quantification of error and uncertainty in palaeo proxy records; (2) Quantification of uncertainty in complex models; (3) Methodologies which enable statistically robust model-data comparison, taking into account the nature and sparsity of data and model uncertainties; (4) Forecasting and future climate projections based on palaeoclimate analysis.  This session is sponsored by the EPSRC-funded Past Earth Network, PEN (www.pastearth.net).
