Session ID#: 18078

Session Description:
Several types of auroras, such as pulsating and flickering aurora, are known to turn on and off or vary between bright and dim on time scales of fractions of a second to a few tens of seconds. A common characteristic is a remarkable irregularity in their temporal and spatial variations. Various wave-particle interactions in the inner magnetosphere have been implicated in the structure of fluctuating aurora. This common occurring phenomenon has been studied for more than 60 years but the underlying processes remain poorly understood. Recent observational advances both from ground-based observations and satellites have provided an excellent opportunity to finally understand the fluctuating aurora. The aim of this session is therefore to present studies that can contribute to our understanding of the underlying physics behind the fluctuating aurora. Theoretical as well as observationally driven studies are welcome.
