Session Description:
Soils are complex mixtures of inorganic and organic materials, liquids, and living organisms that perform many physico-chemical and biologic functions, including water storage and plant growth. Soils are also related to carbon and nutrient cycling, playing a major role in atmospheric fluxes. Soils are therefore critical for many disciplines, not only for subsurface characterization and remediation purposes, but also for climate change. However the understanding of soil processes and dynamics is still incomplete and techniques to enhance spatial and temporal resolution are needed. In this session we request abstracts focusing on: 1) geophysical characterization/imaging of soil physical properties; 2) geophysical monitoring of soil processes/dynamics and their interaction with biogeochemical cycles; and 3) geophysical signatures associated with soils and their interface with the hydrosphere, biosphere and/or atmosphere. Laboratory/field-based studies ranging from single-point to larger scale with implications for the monitoring of geochemical and/or microbiological processes in soils are of particular interest.
