Developing Critical Measurement Strategies in Ionosphere/Thermosphere/Mesosphere Research: Ideas and Priorities I Posters

Session Description:
The National Academy Heliospheric Decadal Survey recommends science priorities for Ionosphere/Thermosphere/Mesosphere research.  Many of these priorities involve study of the coupled ionosphere-atmosphere-magnetosphere system from multiple vantage points, providing “global” measurements of this tightly coupled system.  In particular, distributed measurements of the behavior of both the electrodynamic/plasma environment and the coupled dynamics/neutral gas properties constitutes a consistent, recognized theme considered critical for achieving significant advances.  At low and mid-latitudes, the Decadal Survey articulated the need to measure lower atmosphere forcing with high temporal and spatial resolution to significantly advance our understanding of this important driver of the I-T system.  The purpose of this session is to foster community dialogue and interaction and to ensure that new observing strategies, including both ground-based and space-based concepts, consider current scientific understanding and newly-developed techniques in measurement, modeling, and theory.  Contributions that highlight outstanding problems as well as results that motivate further investigation, are encouraged.
