Session Description:
The challenges that hydrological extremes pose to sustainable development around the world are severe and growing, underscoring the need to better characterize the mechanisms that modulate extreme events (e.g., intense rainfall, floods and droughts). The session welcomes contributions using models, remote sensing, and in-situ observations among the topics that explore five challenging questions, (1) How three aspects of extreme events (persistence, clustering and compound nature) that increase their impact are altered under different alternations (global warming, land use change, etc.)?, (2) What is likely the degree of non-stationarity, trends and scale dependence of extremes and how this variation influence extreme occurrence, predictability, and clustering?, (3) How can hypothesis testing, diagnostics and model development help us to better quantify uncertainty in extreme prediction?, (4) How can environmental changes initiate, extend and intensify the risk of extremes?, and (5) How can adaptation strategies help us reduce the societal consequences of hydrological extremes?
