Session Description:
Crustal magmatic plumbing systems at restless and erupting volcanoes are well manifested in geophysical and geochemical data and yield insights into the characteristics of magma storage and transport.  At extinct systems that have been exposed by erosion, geological studies provide direct evidence of the shapes and sizes of subvolcanic feeders while also preserving the end result of dynamic subsurface processes.  While geophysics and geochemistry are increasingly used in concert to investigate active volcanic systems, synergy with geologic studies of extinct volcanoes is lacking.  We aim to address this discrepancy by bringing together scientists from all disciplines to focus on the general problem of understanding shallow volcanic plumbing systems, and we hope to foster discussions that will lead to a better appreciation of how investigations of active and extinct systems can inform one another and result in a more complete understanding of the characteristics of shallow magma storage and transport.
