Session Description:
The mechanical and transport properties in fractured and porous media are fundamental to predicting coupled multiphysics processes. Examples include carbon sequestration, unconventional resources recovery, induced seismicity, geothermal recovery, and soil wetting and drying. In geologic formations, coupled thermal, mechanical, chemical and hydrological interactions alter the medium’s transport properties, leading to complex emergent behaviors across a huge range of spatiotemporal scales. In this session, we discuss recent experimental, theoretical, and numerical advances in flow through fractured and deformable porous media, with emphasis on preferential or emergent fluid pathways due to hydrodynamic instabilities, reaction-induced precipitation/dissolution, stress and thermal gradient changes, and/or coupled chemo-mechanical processes. Of particular interest are studies that (1) focus on innovative experimental methods including 3D printing techniques and multi-scale imaging for characterizing multiphase and reactive fluid flow and the associated fluid-rock interactions and (2) expose the underlying pore-scale physics, linking them to effective properties and behavior at larger scales.
