Session Description:
The forms and fluxes of carbon in Earth determine its long-term fate on the planet. Carbon may be recycled to the surface through volcanism, relaminate the deep crust or sink into the mantle at subduction zones. Mantle-destined carbon may form diamonds or rise again as fluids and/or melts that feed volcanic systems. Quantifying carbon fluxes between these reservoirs is the subject of intense research, utilising field observations, experiments and numerical modelling. This research addresses fundamental questions: does carbon subduction affect surface abundances over geological time? Or is carbon returned efficiently to surface reservoirs via metamorphism, migration, magmatism and eruption? Is the net flux of carbon into or out of Earth and did the net flux change through time? This session brings together scientists studying carbon, its forms, quantities, movements and origins in the Earth system, from geochemistry to petrology, volcanology, geodynamics, thermodynamics, geophysics, paleoclimate and geology.
