Session Description:
Applied geophysics is being taught to undergraduates in both classroom and field settings. Our audience is academically diverse; it includes students pursuing various fields and who come to us with a range of quantitative skills. Often our goal is to share the uses and limitations of various geophysical techniques, and to highlight basic quantitative concepts. We incorporate case-based, experiential, and field-based learning opportunities where technology plays an important part, but this may also pose sincere limitations for small institutions. The key objective of this session is to share best practices which allow students to learn about and apply key concepts of applied geophysics in a range of academic settings (from large research-intensive institutions to small community colleges, from large lecture based courses to small group research experiences). We are particularly interested in any approaches linked to quantitative and/or qualitative research that assesses the pedagogical merit of these approaches.
