The Madden-Julian Oscillation: Observations, Theoretical Understanding, Modeling, and Prediction

Session Description:
The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is widely recognized as one of the major modes of variability of the atmosphere-ocean system that has widespread impacts on global weather extremes and climate. However, our current climate models struggle to accurately simulate and predict the MJO and its remote influences. In this session, we invite presentations that highlight recent progress on a broad range of MJO studies, including but not limited to, 1) observations of the multi-scale structure and critical processes of the MJO based on data from in-situ field experiments (e.g., YMC and PISTON), remotely-sensed datasets, and new reanalyses; 2) MJO influences on worldwide weather and climate; 3) theoretical understanding and modeling of essential MJO dynamics and physics; 4) climate model development efforts towards improved MJO simulations; and 5) subseasonal prediction skill and predictability of the MJO and its associated global extreme phenomena.
