H13H:
Processes, Consequences, and Potentials in Coastal Zone Hydrogeology II Posters
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 22345
Session Description:
About one third of the world's population lives within 100 km of the coastline. Threats to coastal aquifers are various, extending from potential pollution to overexploitation. Increasing pressure on these freshwater sources due to climate change, population growth, and industrial and agricultural water demands will endanger a secure water supply.
We envisage a session which includes aspects of groundwater dynamics and quality in coastal zones and oceanic islands, additionally considering contributions on inland salinization, e.g. caused by waterlogging, basin brines, and salt deposits.
Sub-topics could be, but are not limited to:
(Geophysical) monitoring techniques tracking seawater intrusion (SWI)
Hydrogeochemical investigations at the freshwater/saltwater interface and through submarine groundwater discharge (SGD)
Numerical modeling, analytical solutions, and experiments
Management of groundwater resources on islands and in coastal zones in times of climate change and increasing water demand
Studies on mitigative and adaptive measures to combat salinization, e.g. aquifer storage and recovery (ASR)
