Altimetry in the Coastal Zone: Techniques, Applications and Synergies with Models

Session Description:
Recent technological advances (SAR, SARin and Ka-band altimetry) and processing improvements promise more and better data closer to the coast, filling an important gap.

We invite contributions highlighting how satellite data are improved in the coastal zone (technologies, algorithms, etc.) and used (also in combination/synergy with in situ and/or modelling tools) to contribute to the research/monitoring of coastal ocean and enclosed seas. Dynamics in estuaries, river plumes, permafrost-affected coastal plains, and studies highlighting the integration of in situ/altimetry/modelling in the coastal zone using remote processing platforms providing access to data, tools and processors are also welcome.

Altimetry is an important component of the coastal observing system to assess the coastal impacts of climate change, quantify the natural variability in currents and sea state and help improve predictions and forecasting skill of numerical models, all contributing to the WCRP Grand Challenge on Regional Sea-Level Change and Coastal Impacts.
