The magnetism of faults and shear zones

Session Description:
Faults are narrow zones of localized, discontinuous and large deformation. Because their movement may cause earthquakes, displace ore bodies, or control hydrocarbon reservoirs, faults are of foremost importance to society. The physical changes associated with faulting have been examined from multiple angles including rock mechanics, seismic or electrical properties. In the last decade, numerous studies have unravelled the potential of magnetism to map the architecture of faults at depth, assess earthquake focal mechanism, investigate deformation processes, characterize cataclastic strain, or determine fault kinematics. The session aims to bring together scientists interested in the broad topic of fault magnetism as well as those that have contributed to this emerging field of research with the goal to promote discussion and collaborations, define the main questions remaining to be answered, and pursue current and future research opportunites in existing programs (ICDP, IODP).
