Complex-Terrain Meteorological Studies Relevant to Wind Energy Forecasting

Session Description:
Atmospheric flow in complex terrain has received increased attention in recent years because of its numerous applications, including air pollution, aviation and wind energy harvesting. Such applications demand accurate weather forecasts at meso- and micro- scales, yet the predictability of complex-terrain winds remains challenging due to spatial and temporal variability of wind fields over mountainous areas as well as their sensitivity to non-stationary forcing.
This session will provide an opportunity to present recent advances in mountain meteorology with relevance to wind power forecasting and wind energy resource assessment.
We solicit contributions that address major scientific gaps in accurately capturing and representing atmospheric boundary layer processes in the presence of topographic effects, and modifications thereof by wind turbines.
Observational, theoretical and numerical studies as well as contributions on cutting-edge remote sensing technologies are welcome.
