Organo-Mineral-Microbe Interactions in Terrestrial Ecosystems

Session Description:
Interactions between organic matter, minerals, and microbes influence transformations, dynamics, and bioavailability of soil organic carbon, nutrients (N, P), and heavy metals (e.g., Hg) in terrestrial ecosystems. Minerals not only affect the stability of soil organic matter, but also support microbial growth by providing essential nutrients. Transformations of organic matter and minerals/metals are also controlled by microbe-mediated reactions. This session includes but not limited to: 1) Experimental work on biogeochemical pathways and reaction mechanisms in a variety of terrestrial environments, such as Arctic tundra, subtropical and tropical soils, and wetlands; 2) Investigations on mineral effects on organic molecules transformation at the organo-mineral interfaces; 3) Analyses of microbial activities and responses during the interaction with soil minerals and organic matter; 4) Geochemical modeling to integrate organic matter distribution, microbial community, mineral composition, and redox dynamics in biogeochemical processes. Studies from laboratory and field experiments, computation, and multi-scale modeling, are all welcome.
