Emerging Technologies and Advances in Identifying Catchment Sediment Sources

Session Description:

The environmental and socio-economic significance of fine-grained sediment fluxes through catchments highlights the need to develop appropriate approaches and tools to identify the principal sources and pathways involved.  Sediment source identification is critical to management agencies charged with evaluating the success or failure of mitigation strategies designed to disrupt or sever existing sediment pathways? In recent years, advances have been made in sourcing sediment through: 1) the use of multiple fingerprints (e.g. geochemistry, color, mineral magnetism, radionuclides, organic signatures, and other tracers), to identify significant sediment sources, and (2) remote sensing, such as the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), lidar, and other emerging mapping technologies, that quantify change in geomorphic features and which contribute, and connect, sediment stores via demonstrable pathways to rivers. This session invites presentations on these developing and emerging techniques for catchment sediment-source dynamics.
