Meteorological observations from ground and space-based Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS)

Session Description:
GNSS has revolutionised positioning, navigation and timing, but has also provided an accurate sensor of atmospheric water vapour. GNSS-meteorology has evolved into a well established field with assimilation in a number of National meteorological agencies. Rceent advances in GNSS have made it possible to derive new, advanced tropospheric products for use in severe weather monitoring and for climate science.

GNSS can also be used to estimate additional atmospheric observations such as ionospheric Total Electron Content and reflected signals used for soil moisture and snow depth monitoring (GNSS-reflectometry). Recent techniques have evolved using standard (non-inverted) GNSS antennae, which opens up the possibility of using existing, commercial GNSS networks as low-cost, snow and soil moisture observing sensors.

This session will present  new products and observing techniques in the fields of tropospheric, ionospheric and GNSS-reflectometry, with a particular focus on severe weather and climate.
