Session Description:
This session aims to further our understanding of hydrocarbon emissions and transport in the geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. This session specifically focuses on addressing questions about water column hydrocarbon transport, such as ocean gas plumes, vents, and seeps, in order to understand the geological and oceanographic controls on hydrocarbon flows through the marine environment and ecosystem. These plumes may provide transport mechanisms for vertical ocean mixing and microbial migration as well as lateral advection. Bubble-mediated hydrocarbon transport from the seabed through the water column and to the sea surface will be considered including emissions from both natural (seepage) or anthropogenic (leakage) sources. Understanding the fate and role of ocean hydrocarbons has industry relevance (in the case of accidental release), and agency/societal relevance due to the role of these hydrocarbons in the ecosystem (including fisheries) and environment, including potential natural contributions to coastal water column oxygen demand and greenhouse gas budgets.
