Ocean-Atmosphere Exchange: Links with Marine Biology, Clouds, and Climate

Session Description:
The exchange of trace gases and aerosols between the ocean and atmosphere affects marine ecosystems, clouds, and climate. Atmospheric inputs influence the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and primary productivity in the ocean. Oceanic emissions affect the formation, number concentration, and composition of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and ice nucleating particles (INP), and influence the reactive chemistry, budgets, and lifetimes of climate-active gases. This session invites contributions from modeling, field, laboratory, and satellite studies in the general areas of (1) sea spray aerosol and trace gases found in the marine boundary layer (e.g., halogens and DMS, etc); (2) sea-surface micro layer composition, dissolved and particulate organic matter in the ocean; (3) aerosol deposition, biogeochemical cycling of nutrients derived from atmospheric inputs, and nutrient solubility.
