Ocean-Atmosphere Coupling Over the North Atlantic: Processes, Global Teleconnections and Predictability

Session Description:
Interaction between the North Atlantic and the atmosphere are connected to a variety of climate phenomena. Better understanding these phenomena and the underlying processes will lead to new insight into low-frequency climate variability and enhance forecasts on seasonal to decadal timescales. But the exact nature of the coupling and how faithfully it is simulated by models is still under debate. For example, studies suggest that models misrepresent the ocean-atmosphere heat exchanges, thereby underestimating internal variability. The relative roles of tropical and extratropical SSTs in driving variability are also uncertain. This session is interested in: (1) local interactions between ocean (e.g., AMV, AMOC, Gulf stream, tripolar SST pattern), sea ice, atmosphere, and associated predictability; (2) interactions between the North Atlantic and other ocean basins, (e.g., between AMV and the Pacific); (3) contributions of internal and forced climate variability in these processes and its implications for projections (e.g., hiatus).
