Agricultural Expansion and Forest Loss in Tropical Regions: Observations, Drivers, Impacts, and Solutions II Posters

Session Description:
To feed the 7 billion people on the planet, ~40% of the land surface has been changed into croplands. The tropics remains an important agricultural frontier also experiencing one of the world’s fastest rates of deforestation, which is likely to continue over the next decades given the near doubling of food demand expected by 2050. Beyond the lost carbon and biodiversity, agricultural expansion could have large additional ecosystem and environmental impacts, the extent dependent on the geographical and ecological features of the new cropland. For instance, agricultural expansion is rapidly occurring in the uplands of mainland Southeast Asia. Identifying the spatial heterogeneity of agriculture expansion and deforestation in the tropics, and its underlying drivers and impacts, have significant implications for both forest conservation and sustainable food security. This session invites submissions that address observations, drivers, impacts, and solutions of agricultural expansion and deforestation in the tropics during the 21st century.
