North American Land Cover and Land Use – Advances and Change

Session Description:
In recent years improvements in earth observation data, storage and processing have advanced significantly. This has provided the capacity to produce land cover and land cover change information at higher spatial resolution, over large extents, and more accurately than previous. Land cover and land cover change are important inputs to mesoscale models related to meteorological, hydrological, biochemical, air quality, and species distribution as examples. It is considered an essential climate variable and important for statistical reporting, e.g. in the context of REDD+. This session aims at presenting recently developed or released as well as forthcoming land cover and land use maps over large extents with a preference on datasets over North America. We also welcome submissions on innovative approaches for spatially-explicit change estimation that can be applied at national to continental scales. Applications of large area land cover and land change datasets within North America would also be of interest.
