Magmatism and continental break-up: when, why and consequences

Session Description:
Continental extension leading to lithospheric break-up is often associated with mantle melting. This magmatism may accompany the major stretching and necking stages of the continental lithosphere or simply occur at the very end of the continental extension leading to breakup. Accordingly, the apparent volumes of magma within the continental lithosphere appear to be extremely variable.

Comparison between magma-rich and magma-poor margins highlight that striking differences exist in the spatial and temporal processes. These processes include: (i) the magma addition within the lithosphere and asthenosphere dynamics, (ii) the mechanical vs. thermal lithosphere thinning and necking, (iii) the ductile behavior of the lower crust, and (iv) the final establishment of steady state seafloor spreading.

For this session, we are seeking contributions from multi-disciplined approaches that clarify the critical genetic concepts that evolve during the formation of passive rifted margins especially regarding the timing, origin and role of magmatism regarding continental break-up.
