Session Description:
Advocacy, defined as the act or process of supporting a cause or proposal, is a subset of and gives a voice to specific civic engagement items and issues. Civic engagement is a common piece of an institution mission statement, yet faculty and administrative leaders face varied challenges when it comes to advocacy efforts. Some individuals, both inside and outside of higher education, question if advocacy can or should be part of undergraduate education. The term “advocacy” is at times misunderstood and even viewed negatively, but advocacy plays a critical role in gathering support for science resources, programs, funding, or perhaps just to get a conversation started on Earth and space science. This session seeks to call attention to a range of models for science advocacy, including examples of how advocacy education and engagement can be contained within courses or be designed to bring together audiences across local-to-global campuses and communities.
