Carbon and Nutrient Cycling and Transport at the Land-Ocean interface: Current understanding and future research directions

Session Description:
As a result of natural and anthropogenic processes, rivers, estuaries and coastal margins provide a central link between the land and the ocean.  Understanding this linkage is fundamental to understanding the feedbacks and interactions between terrestrial and marine cycles of carbon and other elements. This special session is intended to synthesize research activities that address the impact of climate variability, climate change, and land-cover/land-use change on the transport and cycling of carbon and nitrogen to and within the coastal oceans through the use of field observations, satellite data and models including (a) effects of extreme events on the magnitude and seasonality of transports of carbon and nitrogen, (b) impacts of these changes on ecosystem processes and biogeochemical cycling, and (c) impacts of land use, climate variability, and climate change on carbon and nutrient cycling in coastal ocean margins through changing the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems in major watersheds.
