Chemical Processes in the Atmospheric Aqueous Phase

Session Description:
The aqueous phase of clouds, fogs and aerosol particles comprises a medium where unique chemical reactions can occur that lead to different products and yields than in the gas phase. It has been recognized for several decades that substantial amounts of atmospheric sulfate, and more recently, that also secondary organic aerosol is formed in the aqueous phase of clouds and fogs. In addition, concentration levels of oxidants and other key compounds in the atmospheric multiphase system can be significantly affected by the aqueous phase of clouds, fogs and particles.  

Contributions are invited that show evidence of aqueous phase processes from observations, laboratory and model studies. They include, but are not restricted to, laboratory results using new techniques, observations that identify an ‘aqueous processing signature’ and model studies that aim at improving the representation of aqueous chemistry in atmospheric models or apply current models to suitable data sets.
