Applications of Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Data Mining, and Informatics in Climate, Weather, and the Geosciences.

Session Description:
This session showcases the growing use of machine learning across multiple disciplines in the geosciences. Supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning techniques are finding broad application in areas including, but not limited to: automated detection of extreme weather events, automated analysis of remote sensing data, analysis of climate model data, time series analysis, trend prediction, weather prediction, process emulation, improvements to data assimulation, improvements to uncertainty quantification, and the combination of predictions across multiple models. Although application areas differ, these efforts have much in common, typically involving large data sets, high-dimensional spaces, and nonlinear relationships. This session is intended to facilitate discussion amongst machine learning practitioners.
