Degraded and Second Growth Tropical Forests in the Earth System II Posters

Session Description:
Land use and land cover changes in tropical forest ecosystems have global impacts on carbon, nutrient, water, and surface energy budgets. Changes in land use are not restricted to deforestation. Remaining tropical forests are often near the edge of deforested areas and have been degraded from logging, fire, livestock grazing, and fragmentation. Second growth forests in previously deforested areas are common in some landscapes, and reforestation programs aim to rapidly expand tropical forest cover in coming years.While important, the contribution of degraded and second growth forests to biogeochemistry, water, and energy cycles is still poorly quantified. This session welcomes contributions from field measurements and experiments, remote sensing observations, and models that advance our understanding of the role of second growth and degraded tropical forests in the Earth System.
