Gas Hydrate Environments: Genesis, Stability, and Influence on Seafloor Morphology and the Biosphere II Posters

Session Description:
A growing body of research has demonstrated that the accumulation of gas hydrate along continental margins is a common occurrence; however, relatively little is known about the environmental dynamics associated with such deposits including: the types of hydrate growth, gas and fluid migration within sediment and hydrate, the evolution of hydrates and their influence on seafloor morphology, authigenic mineralization associated with hydrate growth and decomposition, the impact of hydrates on slope stability, and the development of chemosynthetic communities in such environments. This session welcomes reports resulting from geochemical, biological and geophysical field programs, as well as lab modelling, and geotechnical research on sea floor stability. The aim is to bring together various investigative approaches and to compare gas hydrate environments and their evolution through geological history. We solicit studies using novel methods and approaches to bring new perspectives on the formation and decomposition of gas hydrate on the sea floor.
