Development and Validation of Organic Geochemical Proxies

Session Description:
Due to recent and unprecedented anthropogenic changes to the environment, future climate has become more enigmatic. To better understand our tomorrow, we look to past earth system dynamics. Chemical fossils preserved in the geologic record are used to extract information about the environmental conditions in which organisms had once lived. Organic geochemical proxies have been studied for decades and, through continuing innovation and technological advancements, have given us a clearer understanding of earth’s history. This session aims to highlight these innovations by bringing together researchers who work on the development and validation of these proxies. We invite contributions that explore novel biomarkers, new analytical methods, and advanced instrumentation to ultimately reconstruct past environments, particularly through highly quantitative methods such as compound-specific isotope analysis. We encourage presenters to demonstrate the improvements and innovations, as well as limitations, of organic geochemical proxies.
