H31A:
Advances in Characterizing Extreme Storms, Flood Risk, and Flood Risk Management IV Posters
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 23739
Session Description:
Severe storm and flood related disaster events are on the rise globally with three of the highest recorded events occurring during the past six years in the US alone. The increasing trend is expected to continue in the future due to the warming of the earth and the intensification of the hydrological cycle. Adaptation to this trend requires proper design and management of stormwater facilities using improved characterization of the intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) of storms and associated flooding risk by considering their nonstationarity, impacts of snow, and underlying hydrometeorological phenomena. This session invites contributions on development and application of 1) the next-generation of IDF curves considering nonstationary climate, 2) downscaling and bias correction techniques targeting extreme precipitations, 3) methodologies for characterizing snow effects on IDF curves, 4) hydrologic models to estimate runoff and flooding risks associated with design storms, 5) design approaches to managing flood risk under nonstationarity and climate uncertainty.
