Data Assimilation and Inverse Modeling of Atmospheric Composition

Session Description:
Assimilating measurements of chemical and aerosol constituents into atmospheric chemistry models is imperative to building predictive capability. This session focuses on recent and novel development and application of data assimilation (DA) and inverse modeling approaches in atmospheric chemistry and physics, featuring new approaches and applications with new or proposed future measurement systems.  We invite contributions related to advances in: 1) estimating emissions and fluxes of gases and aerosols; 2) efficient operational algorithms (e.g., variational, ensemble, and hybrid approaches) for DA, inversion, and sensitivity analysis; 3) multi-species and/or coupled DA; 3) assimilating ‘big’ data, complex, and/or new observations; 5) characterizing and quantifying model and observation errors and uncertainties; and 6) related activities.
