Assigning chronology to geologic processes using magnetic methods

Session Description:
Magnetic methods are important for assigning both absolute and relative time to geological sequences. Magnetostratigraphy and correlation to the Geological Polarity Time Scale (GPTS) constitute a standard dating tool in the Earth sciences, applicable to a wide variety of sedimentary (but also volcanic) rock types formed in different environments (continental, lacustrine, marine). Relative paleointensity variations observed in younger marine or continental sequences can be used to correlate and assign time at high-resolution. In addition, astronomically-forced climate cycles encoded magnetically have enabled high-resolution time calibration of sedimentary sequences from the Neogene to the Precambrian. This session invites contributions that use magnetic methods to improve the GPTS, better date the geological record, help understand paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental changes, and resolve sedimentation dynamics in tectonically active basins. We would especially welcome studies that integrate magnetostratigraphy with isotopic dating, bio-, cyclo- and chemostratigraphic records.
