The Contribution of Scientific Drilling on the Study of Methane Hydrates

Session Description:
The study of methane hydrates has been ongoing for over 40 years. Significant strides have been made in our understanding of the occurrence, distribution, and characteristics of marine and Arctic permafrost-associated methane hydrates, but knowledge of the role they may play as an energy resource, geologic hazard, and possible agent in climate change is incomplete. Research drilling, logging, and coring programs carried out by DSDP/ODP/IODP, government agencies, and industry consortia have contributed greatly to our understanding of gas hydrates in marine and permafrost environments. This session will focus on how scientific drilling has and will continue to advance our understanding of the geologic controls on the formation, occurrence, and stability of methane hydrates in nature. It is expected this session will attract contributions from completed, ongoing, and planned methane hydrate drilling and testing programs from offshore India, China, Korea and Japan, the Gulf of Mexico, and possibly from northern Alaska.
