Astronomical Forcing of Past Climate

Session ID#: 24020

Session Description:
While there is evidence that specific orbital frequencies pace climate change cycles within the geologic record, the mechanisms and feedbacks involved are still unclear for most of the Cenozoic. Identifying these frequencies in geological records is integral towards (1) providing robust chronologies for comparison of high-resolution, globally distributed geological records and (2) assessing processes and feedbacks related to glacial-interglacial cycles. The astronomic theory of climate change, first proposed by Milankovitch and elaborated upon several times since then, connects variations in the Earth’s orbit to glacial-interglacial cycles, albeit this theory fails to explain certain features of the geologic past. As we continue to develop high-resolution globally distributed records more questions emerge concerning the pacing of various features of the climate system. This session aims to bring together proxy-based, theoretical and/or modeling studies focused on global and regional climate responses to astronomical forcing at different time scales in the late Phanerozoic.
