Understanding the Influence of Near-Surface Materials on Seismic Wave Amplitudes: Methods for Measuring, Modeling, and Using Site Response II Posters

Session Description:
Changes in seismic wave amplitudes caused by near-surface materials are crucial to many aspects of earthquake hazard assessments. These site response and basin effect estimates are used to adjust amplitudes of recordings used to determine ground-motion prediction equations, to quantify the amplification of ground motions in urban areas and at specific sites, and to extrapolate between bedrock ground motions and observed surface ground motions. This session is intended to explore and compare methods used to understand the influence of shallow strata on ground motions. Contributions can include presentations on theoretical studies and modeling of near-surface effects, development of methods for measuring near-surface material properties, and direct measurements of the influence of shallow materials on ground motions.
