Groundwater Flow and Transport in Heterogeneous Media: New Insights from Experimental, Numerical, and Stochastic Investigations III Posters

Session Description:
Natural aquifers typically exhibit multi-scale physical/chemical heterogeneity, challenging the quantification of groundwater flow and contaminant transport. Various stochastic hydrological models have been proposed in the last three decades, but have neither significantly impacted the practice of groundwater flow and transport modeling, nor have they resulted in solution of major challenges such as groundwater quality protection and clean-up. The major reasons for this, identified by two surveys, are the lack of aquifer information and a failure to capture real-world conditions. Are we close to creating next-generation stochastic models? What are the future research directions for stochastic models? This session will provide an opportunity for hydrologists to communicate and exchange research results from various hydrological processes. Topics include, but are not limited to:

o Experimental or numerical studies of groundwater flow and contaminant transport;

o Geophysical/hydrogeochemical investigation of subsurface information and processes;

o Stochastic models for non-Darcy flow or non-Fickian transport.
