Dynamics and Environmental Impacts of Southern Hemisphere Westerly Wind Changes: Proxy Records and Model Simulations

Session Description:
The Southern Hemisphere Westerly Winds (SHWW) have been suggested to exert an important control on regional and global climate, through impacts on deep water upwelling in the Southern Ocean and on the global carbon cycle. However, the spatiotemporal patterns and behavior of SHWW changes are still poorly understood over different timescales (from glacial-interglacial cycles to last century). In this session, we intend to bring proxy and modeling studies together to address SHWW change and its impacts on climate and landscapes. We welcome contributions on proxy records from marine and fjord records, ice cores and terrestrial records (including lake, peat, speleothems, tree ring, etc.) as well as model simulations. We also welcome presentations on using instrumental and reanalysis data to understand long-term climate dynamics. In particular, we strongly encourage data-model comparison studies as well as large-scale synthesis work.
