Transient Forcing of the Cusp/Polar cap Ionosphere/Thermosphere System

Session Description:
The dynamics of the cusp/polar cap is strongly driven by magnetopause reconnection. Transient reconnection gives rise to transient flow channels, waves, instabilities, and plasma turbulence phenomena that cascades to efficient heating of the thermosphere-ionosphere system. Coordinated observations, theory and modelling of multi-scale physics are needed to decode the complexity of the cusp/polar cap dynamics. This is true in order to develop a proper physical description of the ionosphere-thermosphere system response to transient reconnection, that includes space weather phenomena such as radio waves scintillations, ion upwelling/outflows and satellite drag. This session focuses on all aspects of high-latitude dynamics, including micro- and macro-scale physics, field-aligned currents and flow dynamics, generation of waves, instabilities, and scintillation phenomena. New research initiatives involving multi-instrument observations and those relating the plasma physics to the observational phenomena are particularly welcome.
