Session Description:
Fine-grained nano-porous shale formations play a critical role in global hydrocarbon development activity. However, we are currently unable to reliably characterize and predict long-term production performance and associated deformation in these important energy resources. A physical understanding of geomechanical and petrophysical properties is needed for efficient hydrocarbon production. This session aims to address: a) primary experimental challenges for reliable determination of rock properties in shale formations, b) what we should measure, what we can measure, and how we should measure, c) experimental results illuminating fundamental deformation and fluid flow behavior, and d) new interpretation techniques.
