Atmospheric Chemistry of the Southern Hemisphere

Session Description:
Large areas of the southern hemisphere are near pristine and provide an opportunity to investigate the natural atmosphere relatively free of anthropogenic influence, and thus to define the baselines from which human influences can be assessed. At the same time, emissions from natural terrestrial and oceanic sources, seasonal biomass burning and expanding megacities can have large local to hemispheric influence. Changing climate and rapid urbanisation in a chemical regime that differs from the northern hemisphere are driving changes in southern hemisphere emissions and composition. The southern hemisphere is experiencing rapid development so it is imperative that we assess atmospheric composition today to interpret large and dramatic changes anticipated in the future. This session welcomes submissions presenting laboratory, observational, and modelling studies that can provide insight into the unique and changing southern hemisphere atmosphere. Results from recent field campaigns, as well as work highlighting where new observations are needed, are encouraged.
