A11C:
Cloud-Aerosol-Radiation-Climate Interactions in the Southeast Atlantic II Posters
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 24808
Session Description:
The southeastern Atlantic hosts one of the largest planetary low cloud decks, unique in being overlain by optically thick aerosol layers of biomass burning aerosol at times. The reflective clouds help set the regional large-scale circulation. The smoke layers absorb shortwave radiation and can produce a direct radiative climate warming when underlain by bright low clouds. The clouds, in turn, are susceptible to atmospheric aerosol in ways that include changes in atmospheric stability and free-tropospheric moisture, and microphysical interactions. The combined impacts on current and future climate are currently poorly understood. Both the low cloud deck and the smoke layer are challenging to simulate at all scales, constituting a major uncertainty in our understanding of key processes and the regional climate. Studies that present new research focused on all aspects of observation and modeling of the interactions between clouds, aerosol, radiation, precipitation and climate over the southeastern Atlantic are solicited.
