Real-Time Quality Control of Oceanographic Data

Session Description:
Most oceanographic observations are now generally expected to be disseminated in real-time whenever possible. Automated real-time QC reduces the distribution of bad observations and highlights those in need of human scrutiny. It can also speed detection and repair of sensor/system failures, improving data return rates. Often, multiple standards for the initial QC of these data exists, or no standard exists. Researchers and the operational community are actively engaged in developing, consolidating,  and documenting procedures and sharing implementation experiences.

Specific topics sought include:

  • Data management of QC information
  • Emerging QC at cabled observatories
  • Implementation of QC at observing system networks such as US IOOS and Canada's MEOPAR
  • Implementation of QARTOD tests
  • Quality assurance standards
  • Development of regional test thresholds
  • Application of QC information to real-world solutions
  • Case studies of challenging QC problems
  • Activities at OOI and NERRS CDMO
  • On board sensor QC development by vendors
