Session Description:
This session focuses on phase transformations of mantle materials at high pressure-temperature conditions and their seismic and dynamic manifestations in the Earth’s interior. The recent developments in seismic methods, as well as the blooming of seismic data from expanded seismic networks, continuously improve the imaging of global and regional phase transitions and seismic structure in their vicinity which can reveal local dynamics. Improving mineral physics constraints on the elastic properties, partitioning behavior, phase stability, and transformations in the major mantle minerals enable interpretation of seismic observations in terms of changes in mineral structure, spin state of iron, and distribution of volatiles such as water. We aim to bring together contributions from mineral physics, dynamics, and seismology that inform and improve our understanding of mantle phase transitions.
