Addressing Cross-Cutting Subsurface Energy Challenges: Dedicated Field Observatories

Session Description:
This session provides an opportunity to present experimental activities in dedicated field observatories that tackle cross-cutting subsurface energy challenges. Borehole-based or situated in deep mines or tunnels, such field observatories allow for focused in situ studies under controlled conditions at well-characterized locations, over long time periods. With cross-cutting challenges, we mean those that are similarly associated with a variety of subsurface energy applications, such as CO2 sequestration, unconventional hydrocarbon extraction, enhanced geothermal systems, nuclear waste disposal, and subsurface energy storage. Cross-cutting research challenges may range from characterization and monitoring to theory and predictive simulation of subsurface behavior; areas of interest include integrity of natural and engineered materials, assessment of stress conditions and induced seismicity potential, and development of new approaches for strategically manipulating subsurface properties and conditions with adaptive control. We invite overview presentations of subsurface energy observatories and detailed presentations of in situ experiments in these observatories.
